Jacub Gagnon

"The only way a kid can survive life in a small rural town is through imagination. That’s what I used to think. Many years later I moved to a big city, grew up, studied art, and graduated. I can now see that an imagination is essential no matter what the scenery is and no matter at what age. Currently practicing as an artist in Toronto, I create images that question and entertain the discussion of connectivity..."

Vinnie Nylon Poptimism Show

Good friend, Vinnie Nylon has been involved in the street art and graffiti movement for over 25 years, producing walls, prints, paintings, graphics and billboards for a variety of small and international companies and commissioners.

This all new body of work is born out of a lifelong collecting obsession, a visual playground in which all of the collected toys and mascots meet head on, a collision designed to level the fields of high and low art. Where old meets new and ultra cute takes on a slightly sinister undertone.

Since the mid 90s Vinnie Nylon has been placing an army of candy coloured characters and advertising mascots onto canvas and walls. A new spin on old favourites, a savage twist on others, all harking back to a simpler post war era when the distinction between childhood and adulthood was so much clearer.

Lost icons that are no longer employed to distract us from the austerity of mid century Britain and America take on their new guise to reclaim their rightful place in a new visual universe.
Television as smokescreen, popular as social acceptance, reality sugar coated with a big goofy smile slapped on it. Poptimism reintroduces, reevaluates and explores the themes of seduction by ad media, sentimental attachment and mass production.

The works on show include vintage petrol cans, sticker art, fanzine and screen print as well as a number of new paintings and mixed media pieces. Trademark bright colours and thick impasto sit beside the more demure offerings of hand finished print and collage pieces.

The frame is the door that leads into a world of visual pop delights and plastic fantastic high low art for all to enjoy, so step inside and keep it pop, never stop playing.

Barry McGee Show BAM/PFA

Arrested Motion have great coverage of Barry McGee's show at BAM/PFA that opened yesterday. Wish I could see all his retrospective work in one massive show...

"San Francisco-based Barry McGee returns for his first Bay Area solo museum exhibition in 18 years at BAM/PFA (UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). This will mark his first midcareer survey, in which all of his previous major installations have been reinterpreted and put under one roof (from his van installation at REDCAT to his Street Market at Deitch to a 1999 stolen mural that was placed on Howard Street in San Francisco, just to name a few). This exhibition as been three years in the making, with the elaborate set-up first starting 2-1/2 months ago."

Gina Heyer Photorealistic Paintings

South African painter Gina Heyer's Order and Division series is something special in the world of photorealistic paintings. There something more visceral about her works; they seem to also evoke alot of inner feelings rather than rely on the spectacle and mastery of the photorealism realm. "The haunting photos of an empty school will be familiar to anyone who has ever been in an empty institutional building, snapping you back to the weird sounds and even weirder smells of these places once the people are removed."

Granny Painting Restoration Fail

Poor thing.. if this was my nan, I'd feel so so bad for her....

"An 81-year-old who garnered worldwide media attention after she tried – and spectacularly failed – to restore a painting in her local church may face legal charges.  (The original is pictured left, the current state it was in 1 month ago and her awful restoration attempt is on the right.)

Cecilia Giménez, the well-intentioned amateur restorer from the Spanish city of Borja, is reportedly in bed after an anxiety attack, with neighbours and relatives suggesting she feels overwhelmed because of the media frenzy over the unintentional damage she caused to the mural."
